Help Mum hear better this Mother's Day

Give the gift of hearing this Mother's Day by arranging a Free Hearing Test and getting one yourself too. At Hearing Services Cornwall we can test you in the comfort of your Mum's home or you can come to us at Kernow Ear Health in St. Columb on Thursdays.

One in six adults has a hearing loss and the rate increases as you get older with two in three adults over the age of sixty five likely to have some degree of hearing loss. However, the average time between the realization that something may be wrong with Mum's hearing and actually getting a hearing aid is seven years. That's an awfully long time to miss out on parts of conversation, misunderstanding the TV dialogue or being unable to fully enjoy a family gathering.

Now there's more urgency to check Mum's hearing as a study from the NIDCD (National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders) found a link between hearing loss and an increased risk of depression and published the results in the journal JAMA Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. Scientists analyzed data from 18000 people and found that those with a hearing loss had twice the risk of depression compared to those with excellent hearing.

Women aged 70+ were particularly susceptible to depression with even a moderate hearing loss of 35-50 decibels. The NIDCD study stressed the importance of getting Mum's hearing checked and treated, as well as treating depression in the event of a diagnosed hearing loss.
